Study Finds Small Businesses Risking Data Loss

20th March 2013

A recent survey, featuring over 2000 UK consumers, found that the majority distrust the way businesses store their personal information.

Unsurprisingly, banks came out on top as the least trusted, but mobile phone operators and retailers also fared badly. The research was done by consultancy Davies Hickman Partners, who estimated that around six million consumers have stopped doing business over data security concerns.

A report based on the research suggests various ways in which the problem could be redressed, with simple steps like the use of modern technology to plug security vulnerabilities and improved customer service being two of the best.

There was some good news for business IT however; the report also pointed out that call centres were the most distrusted form of consumer contact, with many feeling more comfortable giving sensitive data via web forms rather than over the phone.
