Web Site Hosting (Shared Hosting)

If you've got one of our Shared Web Hosting Packages, the questions and answers below can answer many of the more common queries our HelpDesk receive:

Q. If I am using FrontPage to edit my Web Site do I need FrontPage Extensions?

Not always - in many cases, you do not need to have FrontPage Extensions in order to upload your site, as FrontPage will offer to upload via FTP instead. However, some special features (such as the Page Counter) do require FrontPage. While we will still provide FrontPage Extension support for legacy packages, Microsoft discontinued FrontPage Extensions in 2002 and you should consider changing to an alternative.

Q. How do I configure my Web Site code to send e-mail via your servers?

General E-Mail can be sent by configuring your scripts using a tool such as JMail (We do not support CDONTS), and by setting the server name as "mail-server.vpwsys" (without any further extension such as .net etc). This will only work from within our Web Hosting Servers.

Q. What FTP Software should I use?

We don't specify any particular FTP Package, although we recommend FTP Voyager as we have tested it extensively and has proven to be a reliable, fully featured tool. However, any FTP Package that works with the FTP Standards should work. We are unable to provide support on using individual FTP products, and you should contact your software vendor for assistance in using the product.

Q. Can I use Macromedia Contribute to edit my web site?

Yes, you can do, and many of our customers do so with success. However, we do not provide support for using Contribute as this is beyond the reasonable level of support included within a Shared Hosting Package.

Q. My Web Hosting package includes an SQL Server Database, how do I use it?

Please review our SQL Server FAQs for more information.

Q .Do you provide a FormMail or Web E-Mail form template I can use?

Yes, we provide such a facility as one of our Site Tools. Review the Support Guide here.
